The photographs in this series document the parallel lives and rituals of the disappearing enclaves of Jews in rural Ukraine and the simultaneous, slow reemergence of Jewish life that is gradually transforming some of the larger communities there today.
The works were created in both the palladium process and color print. The palladium print sizes are similar to snapshots taken in the 1940s, referring to a timeless look at people and culture. Some palladium images are presented as diptychs and triptychs, mimicking stills and motion to allude to intimate stories of people and places, providing a closer look at people beyond a single portrait.
The color works are larger and add a realistic dimension to the story, showing the hues of the people and the places photographed.
The two bodies of work inform one another to provide a comprehensive view of this cultural, social, political, and historical story.
